What could be causing my hip pain?
The most likely causes of hip pain include:
Osteoarthritis.
Osteoarthritis develops over many years as the cartilage protecting your hip joint gradually wears away. Without their layers of slippery cartilage, the bones in the joints rub together, creating friction, inflammation, and pain.
Hip fractures.
The most common place to suffer a hip fracture is the top of your femur (thigh bone) at the point where it tilts toward the hip joint. Hip fractures are particularly likely in older people, especially if they have osteoporosis, which affects bone density.
Bursitis
Bursitis is a problem where the fluid-filled sacs (bursae) that protect your joints swell painfully.
Trochanteric bursitis, also known as greater trochanteric pain syndrome or GTPS, is the most common type of hip bursitis, causing pain on the outer part of your hip that's most intense when you lay on the affected side.
Tendinitis
Hip tendinitis affects the tough connective tissues that attach your muscles to the hip bones. It typically develops from overuse, which leads to inflammation of the tendon and gradual degeneration of the tissues.
You might also experience pain in your hips because of sacroiliac joint dysfunction or a spinal problem, which is known as referred back pain.
How is hip pain treated?
Unless you have an acute injury like a fracture or dislocation that requires urgent surgery, your provider at Integrity Orthopedics is likely to begin your hip pain treatment using conservative approaches. These could include:
Rest and activity modification
Physical therapy
Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)
Steroid injections
Regenerative medicine injections
Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections
Most patients find that a combination of treatments such as these relieves their hip pain and improves joint function considerably.
When is surgery necessary for hip pain?
Serious injuries like fractures often require surgery. This involves realigning the ends of the broken bones and securing them with metal pins, rods, screws, or plates. Other surgeries for hip pain include:
Bursectomy (removal of the bursa)
Core decompression
Metal on metal resurfacing
Free vascular fibular graft
Total, partial, or revision hip replacement
Hip replacement is most often required for advanced arthritis in the joint when other treatments aren't giving you relief from your pain.
Following surgery for hip pain, it's important to work with the highly skilled physical therapists at Integrity Orthopedics to ensure you make a good recovery and regain mobility.
